Some food is better than no food!
I talk with my clients a lot about this concept! Sometimes it’s easy to skip a meal. A tired teen struggles to wake up in time to eat breakfast, or a busy working professional has meetings during the lunch hour.
The perfectionist mindset can get in the way of nourishing your body. If you notice yourself skipping meals because nothing seems “healthy” enough, you need to have a game plan. The breakroom donuts or a drive-thru are not the only options.
Eating balanced meals at regular intervals helps your body have the fuel and focus it needs to get through a work or school day, hit the gym or go to after-school sports, and keep up with all the housework, homework, and errands along the way.
If you find yourself skipping meals because you aren’t sure what to eat, that’s a problem!
One solution is to have a stash of on-the-go snacks.
- Ready-to-drink shelf-stable protein shakes
- Wholesome bars like Kind, Lara Bars, Rx Bars, Picky Bars, etc.
- Fruit
- Nuts
- Yogurt cups
- Cottage cheese cups
- Boiled eggs
- Baby carrots
- Olives
Another solution is to utilize convenience foods. There are many healthy products. Combining a protein with a grain and adding some veggies can make a fast, complete meal.
- A can or pouch of tuna
- Pre-cut vegetables
- Frozen vegetables
- Canned beans
- Lentil pouches
- Rice or quinoa, pre-cooked and frozen or vacuum-packed
- Pre-cooked chicken bites
- Rotisserie chicken
- Boiled eggs
Finally, there’s no shame in store-bought meals. The Costco deli and meat section has been a lifesaver lately for me! They offer grain salads, precooked/seasoned meats, yakisoba with chicken and vegetables, taco kits, and more. While some deli selections are not as healthy as others, some food is ALWAYS better than no food when your body needs nutrients!
Many of my clients also enjoy pre-made meals from Factor or My Fit Foods, or meal kits like Blue Apron or Hello Fresh.
Whatever your situation, it’s possible to find ways to make healthy meals happen. If you’re looking for personalized support, reach out for an appointment or book online! Sometimes talking things through with a skilled dietitian can make all the difference.
